what is it?
Pilates is a series of exercises designed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. The exercises focus on the core postural muscles which provide support for the spine and assist in keeping the body balanced. The practice of Pilates also emphasizes breathing, awareness, and precision of movement.
who is it for?
Pilates is appropriate for all ages and body types and can be individualized for most people. It is especially beneficial for those looking to strengthen and stretch their muscles without increasing the size of their muscles (this is one reason Pilates is so popular with ballet dancers.) Many Pilates exercises, however, are contraindicated for pregnant women as well as those with very serious back conditions. Many studies show do, however, show many benefits of Pilates for those with mild lower back pain.
what are the benefits?
Pilates exercises strengthen your muscles, especially your core strength. This leads to better posture, a more aligned spine, and often reduced lower back pain. Flexibility is also a benefit of Pilates as well as an enhanced awareness of your body. Because Pilates emphasizes breathing and awareness it can also reduce stress.
where does it take place?
Most often, Pilates sessions take place right in your own home. Don’t worry if you feel you don’t have a lot of space, you don’t need as much space as you think. Our personal trainers are not limited to only working in your home though. Personal trainers can come to your place of work or your apartment complex gym, provided they allow outside personal trainers to work there. Although we may sometimes use pieces of equipment, Pilates can be done with nothing but your own body’s resistance so all you need is a mat.
